Production of negatively charged radioactive ion beams
نویسنده
چکیده
Beams of short-lived radioactive nuclei are needed for frontier experimental research in nuclear structure, reactions, and astrophysics. Negatively charged radioactive ion beams have unique advantages and allow for the use of a tandem accelerator for post-acceleration, which can provide the highest beamquality and continuously variable energies. Negative ion beams can be obtainedwith high intensity and some unique beampurification techniques based on differences in electronegativity and chemical reactivity can be used to provide beamswith high purity. This article describes the production of negative radioactive ion beams at the former holifield radioactive ion beam facility at OakRidgeNational Laboratory and at the CERN ISOLDE facility with emphasis on the development of the negative ion sources employed at these two facilities.

Design Issues of Radioactive Ion Beam Facilities
There is an increasing interest in Radioactive Ion Beams throughout the world. These ions open new domains of research for nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and atomic physics. Two methods are used for the production of these beams: fragmentation of a primary, high energy heavy ion beam passing through a thin target or nuclei production in a thick target bombarded either by a heavy ion beam...
متن کاملIntense Highly Charged Heavy Ion Beam Production
With the increase in applications of heavy ions in various fields, the production of intense beams of highly charged heavy ions from ion sources become more and more important. For example, the ion sources are required to produce intense dc beams of highly charged heavy ions for accelerator facilities for radioisotope beam production, and intense short-pulsed beams for injection into synchrotro...
متن کاملCharge breeding of radioactive ions with EBIS and EBIT
A charge state breeder, which transforms externally injected singly charged ions to a higher charge state q+, is an important tool which has applications within atomic, nuclear and even particle physics. The charge breeding concept of radioactive ions has already been demonstrated at REX-ISOLDE/CERN with the use of an Electron beam Ion Source (EBIS) and at several facilities employing Electron ...
متن کاملHybrid Ion Sources for the Production of Highly Charged Ion Beams from Metals
The ECLISSE experiment proved in 2002 the possibility to couple a Laser Ion Source (LIS) with an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) in order to obtain ion beams from refractory metals with a cw beam structure. The use of a LIS inside the ECRIS plasma chamber may permit to increase the beam current and the ion charge state. The use of 3 generation ECRIS may extend the capabilities o...
متن کاملThe Light Ion Guide Cb-ecris Project at the Texas A&m University Cyclotron Institute
Texas A&M University is currently configuring a scheme for the production of radioactive-ion beams that incorporates a light-ion guide (LIG) coupled with an ECRIS constructed for charge-boosting (CB-ECRIS). This scheme is part of an upgrade to the Cyclotron Institute and is intended to produce radioactive beams suitable for injection into the K500 superconducting cyclotron. The principle of ope...
